A BUILDING IS A BUILDING IS A BUILDING. THAT IS WHAT ALL THESE FELLOWS AROUND HERE SAY. BUT IT IS NOT SO SYMPLE. WE STARTED OUT INDEPENDENTLY. A STONE TAKEN FROM A QUARRY NEARLY A THOUSAND KILOMETRES AWAY. A TREE HACKED UP FROM A NOW NON-EXISTENT FOREST. A BRICK COMPOSED OF INFINITE GRAINS OF SAND. HOW CAN WE BE LABELLED AS MERELY « A BUILDING ? » NOT ONCE DID ANY ONE ASK IF WE WANTED TO BECOME THIS. SOMEHOW PEOPLE BROUGHT US TOGETHER. IN TURN WE BROUGHT PEOPLE TOGETHER. NOW THE END IS NEAR, AND WE SOON NO LONGER WILL EVEN BE THE ILL-CONCEIVED TERM BUILDING. THE POEPLE WHO CAME HERE ONCE WILL BE LONG GONE, AND THE STORIES TOLD INSIDE THESE WALLS, FORGOTTEN. MAYBE BEFORE WE ALL DISAPPEAR YOU’LL TAKE THE TIME TO APPRECIATE THE INDIVIDUALITY OF OUR PARTS. AND AT THE VERY LEAST PLEASE TRY TO REMEMBER, WE WERE HERE.
After the demise of the Schweizerische Lokomotiv- und Maschinenfabrik and the temporary use of other companies, the construction company Implenia acquired the entire area in Winterthur-Stadt. After appropriate re-zoning and the creation of a design plan, most of the buildings were demolished and something new was created and is in the process of being created. My picture shows a small extension of an already demolished building. Here artists have thought about the buildings. Unfortunately this is now also a thing of the past.
